RexChain, developed by Prescrypto, was created to address the urgent need for electronic prescription infrastructure in Mexico. In many developing countries, the lack of secure and interoperable e-prescription systems limits healthcare access and exposes patient data to risks. Prescrypto’s RexChain provides an open, secure, and privacy-preserving platform that allows patients and doctors to track prescriptions, supports telemedicine, and ensures interoperability across providers. By replacing paper-based systems prone to forgery, data loss, and lack of ownership, RexChain adapts to decentralized healthcare environments where conventional e-prescription models are ineffective. In 2019, Prescrypto received seed funding from the UNICEF Venture Fund to advance this mission.
Expanding the Product Ecosystem
As of early 2025, RexChain has made significant inroads in the Mexican healthcare market. The platform boasts an impressive user base of approximately 35,000 doctors, representing roughly over 10% of doctors in Mexico. This adoption rate demonstrates the growing acceptance and trust in the RexChain system among healthcare professionals.
Prescrypto has developed a comprehensive ecosystem of products built around RexChain for different users:
- Prescrypto: The main doctor-facing app used to create electronic prescriptions.
- Patient Landing: A patient-facing app that allows users to interact with their prescriptions, both native digital prescriptions and scanned paper prescriptions.
- Prescription Scanning: An innovative tool that uses AI to convert paper-based prescriptions into digital format. This feature is particularly useful for pharmacies, e-commerce platforms, and auditing firms.
- Prescrypto Pharma: A platform that supports the company's business model through targeted advertising to healthcare professionals.
Measuring Impact: Prescription Behavior and Healthcare Access
To assess the impact of its digital prescription positioning tool, Prescrypto conducted a four-month case study evaluating changes in prescription behavior among 20,000 physicians actively using an RexChain in Mexico. The study measured prescription trends before and after the intervention, providing valuable insights into how RexChain enhances medication access, physician engagement, and healthcare efficiency.
Key Findings:
Prescription Volume Increased by 83.3%, Expanding Access to Essential Medications
During the campaign, prescriptions for Koptin (Azithromycin) surged from 150 eRx/month to 275 eRx/month, demonstrating how RexChain accelerates access to essential medications, particularly for patients in underserved areas who might otherwise face delays or challenges with paper-based prescriptions.
Prescription Impressions Increased Physician Awareness of Treatment Options
The campaign generated 8,868 on-screen impressions, ensuring that doctors had better visibility of available medications at the moment of prescription. By highlighting clinically relevant or cost-effective alternatives, RexChain helps bridge gaps in healthcare access, making treatments more accessible and affordable, particularly for vulnerable populations.
52.9% of Prescriptions Came from High-Specialty Doctors, Strengthening Access to Specialized Care
More than half of the new prescriptions came from high-specialty physicians (52.9%), including Obstetrics & Gynecology, Oncology, and Urology. This suggests that RexChain facilitates connections between patients and specialized medical expertise, a critical benefit for those in rural or low-resource areas where access to high-specialty doctors is limited.
Sustainable Growth and Innovation: Business Model & Milestones
Prescrypto has implemented a business model that monetizes its platform while keeping the core service free for users. The primary revenue stream comes from advertising, with a product similar to Google AdWords. When doctors search for medications within the Prescrypto app, the platform can position certain products based on partnerships with pharmaceutical companies. This "virtual sales rep" model allows pharmaceutical companies to reach doctors directly through the platform, providing information about new medications or formulations. The approach has been particularly effective in Mexico's pharmaceutical industry, which is not typically tech-savvy.
Milestones:
- AI Integration for Improved UX: RexChain has recently incorporated AI functionalities, allowing doctors to access advanced features within the platform. This integration enhances the user experience and streamlines the prescription process.
- Indigenous Language Support: In an effort to improve accessibility, Prescrypto has begun translating the patient-facing app into Nahuatl, the second most spoken language in Mexico apart from English. This could potentially impact 300,000 speakers, many of whom are part of vulnerable populations, and aims to break down language barriers and ensure that non-Spanish speaking populations can benefit from the platform.
- Efficiency Gains: The platform has demonstrated significant potential for saving time and costs for both patients and pharmacies. By reducing the need for travel and streamlining prescription processes, RexChain is making healthcare more efficient and accessible.
- Open Source Commitment: Prescrypto continues to maintain an active GitHub repository, showcasing their dedication to open-source principles. This commitment not only fosters innovation but also allows for potential deployment in other regions and contexts.
