Since its early investment by UNICEF’s Venture Fund, IXO has emerged as a pioneer in Web3 infrastructure for measuring, verifying, and financing sustainable development outcomes. From developing protocols and standards since 2014 to building a global decentralized ecosystem, IXO’s journey exemplifies innovation, resilience, and scalability.

Internet of Impacts

The Internet of Impacts is a cutting-edge digital infrastructure designed to bring together blockchain networks, sensors, databases, and AI agents in seamless and powerful ways that constantly adapt by responding to verified progress toward critical goals. Dr Shaun Conway, founder of IXO, describes this as having the potential to function like  “a global digital immune system for Earth and humanity.”

At the heart of this infrastructure are groundbreaking IXO innovations:

  • Cognitive Digital Twins: These virtual counterparts to real-world entities enable precise monitoring, real-time analysis, and seamless coordination of sustainable development efforts. They create a digital bridge that ensures transparency and adaptability in complex systems.
  • Agentic Oracles: These AI-driven services are designed to automate processes, provide decision support, and interact intuitively with users. By leveraging causal analysis and explainable AI, oracles evaluate data, recommend optimal choices, and keep humans in the decision loop. They synchronize and verify real-world data, ensuring impactful and informed outcomes.
  • Causal AI Models: Acting as the analytical backbone, these models autonomously assess outcomes with transparency and accountability. They deliver actionable insights that drive smarter, evidence-based decisions for sustainable development initiatives.

This innovative platform supports climate action, education, and public health by empowering local innovators, with software tools like the JAMBO developer kit, that enable communities to create locally tailored solutions that address their unique needs and challenges.

Amply to Global Impact

IXO’s journey began with Project Amply, supported by a seed investment from the Venture Fund in 2016, demonstrating how blockchain technology had the potential to revolutionize transparency and efficiency in financing early childhood development programs through government grants. By introducing digital identities and verified data for subsidy distributions, the project highlighted the transformative potential of decentralized solutions in improving public services. Building on this foundation, IXO graduated from the UNICEF Venture Fund in 2018 and evolved into the Impacts DAO—a venture cooperative that promotes global collaboration and participative ownership, using decentralized financing and governance mechanisms. This cooperative supports an ecosystem that is driving the ongoing development and deployment of  Internet of Impact solutions, to scale sustainable development initiatives worldwide.

Real-World Impacts

Scaling Clean Energy Access in Zambia

In partnership with Emerging Cooking Solutions, IXO’s platform is driving a transformative initiative in Zambia by powering IoT-enabled cookstoves with advanced operating systems. These systems enable the generation of real-time data to measure carbon emission reductions, ensuring that environmental impacts are both measurable and verifiable. This initiative has significantly improved public health by reducing indoor air pollution, which is a major health hazard in many communities. Additionally, households have benefited economically through lowered energy costs due to the efficiency of these modern cookstoves. Beyond the environmental and health advantages, the initiative will create employment opportunities, particularly for youth, who will be engaged as distribution and support agents for the cookstoves and biofuel pellets, as this national mitigation activity grows to reach up to a million households. By integrating blockchain and AI technologies, this effort exemplifies how innovative digital infrastructure can accelerate climate finance and make sustainable solutions more accessible at scale.

Recognized by the UN Capital Development Fund Digital Innovation Challenge in 2023, this project exemplifies the role of blockchain and AI in accelerating climate finance and scaling mitigation activities.

Empowering Youth Through Impact Gigs

In collaboration with the Yoma ecosystem and regional partners, IXO has been working to leverage these powerful digital capabilities to create opportunities for young people The Yoma Impacts Ecosystem Platform is an initiative co-developed by IXO and UNICEF, to connect young people to opportunities for learning, earning, and entrepreneurship in the Green Economy. By integrating advanced Web3 and AI technologies, the platform creates intelligent, decentralized systems that enable youth to engage in sustainable economic development, environmental action, and climate initiatives. Participants can access training programs to develop digital skills, take part in impactful social and environmental projects, and earn verifiable credentials to build their professional profiles. Incentives for making these contributions are flexible, offering options such as digital tokens, local currency, or mobile airtime. Through decentralized governance, digital measurement, reporting and verification (dMRV) innovations, and by  tokenizing verified outcomes, the Yoma Impact Marketplace is implementing a bold vision to empower youth to become a skilled and active workforce in the Green Economy, to drive meaningful change in their communities. The Yoma Impact Marketplace enables youth to earn income while contributing to meaningful projects. Digital impact certificates track their contributions and can be used to refinance impact activities or redeem services like education opportunities and climate insurance. Active in South Africa, with plans to expand to Zambia, Kenya, and India, the initiative empowers youth to drive Green Economy impacts.

Innovating Outcome-Based Financing

IXO’s AlphaBonds are a decentralised financing mechanism for funding disbursements linked to verified outcomes. In partnership with UBS Optimus Foundation, IXO piloted a project in India to fund tablet-based education programs for children affected by COVID-19. This versatile outcome-based financing mechanism could be implemented in  any sector or type of project, demonstrating IXO’s vision for sustainable development financing.

What Makes the Yoma Impacts Ecosystem Platform Unique?

The Yoma Impacts Ecosystem Platform integrates cutting-edge technologies to enhance youth engagement:

  • Decentralized Identity: Youth own their digital profiles, ensuring data privacy and control.
  • Verifiable Credentials: Participants earn shareable credentials for their skills and work experience.
  • AI-Powered Claim Verification: Automated processes ensure fair and timely compensation.
  • Tokenized Outcomes: Verified impacts are tokenized, enabling innovative investment opportunities.
  • Automated Payment Processing: Once impact activities have been verified, community benefit organizations can trigger automated payments to youth-controlled wallets, with easy off-ramping pathways into fiat-currency, airtime, electricity or grocery vouchers.

IXO has a bold vision for how youth can become engaged as active participants in the tokenized Impacts Economy. By decentralizing identity, payments, and impact verification, IXO fosters equity, transparency, and economic empowerment for young changemakers.

Together with UNICEF, IXO is proving that blockchain and AI are transformative tools for real-world impact. Looking forward, IXO plans to expand the Yoma Impact Marketplace, grow the digital cooperative ecosystem, and launch a Youth Opportunities Fund in collaboration with UNICEF and its supporters.

With a vision for global sustainability, IXO is building a future where youth are empowered, connected, and equipped to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
