Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston was the strongest to ever hit Fiji, causing widespread damage in all four divisions. UNICEF’s Pacific multi-country office worked with the Government of Fiji to pilot the open source communication platform RapidPro as the foundations of a data collection and feedback mechanism for disaster risk reduction. This platform uses SMS, Facebook and other social messaging platforms to facilitate communications between key partners involved in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery operations. Within the first week of signing up, 200+ youth were registered. UNICEF Country office established a strong relationship with the Ministry of Youth and Sports who work with Youth Clubs and represent a potential network of 2000+ clubs that can play a critical role in including youth’s voice on various critical issues.
