eSusFarm is building a blockchain-based insurance platform to improve insurance accessibility for smallholder farmers during climate disasters

Results to date: Partnerships with the Ethereum Foundation and Chainlink have been established for the development of the blockchain integrated within the solution. Etheriscs conducted testing of the blockchain in Kenya, insuring 20,000 farmers, and processing 6,000 payouts by the end of the season. The platform is undergoing additional customization to be deployed in Uganda, in partnership with a consortium comprising 13 insurance companies.

Workplan: During the investment period, the company will test the blockchain platform for at least eight months, which are two production seasons for the farmers in Uganda’s north and east regions. This testing aims to insure 20,000 farmers through the platform to test the weather-based index insurance.

Investment rationale: eSus Farm offers an interesting use case of insurance on blockchain. Alternatives to traditional insurance, such as parametric insurance (a type of insurance contract that insures a policyholder against the occurrence of a specific event by paying a set amount based on the magnitude of the event) could have programmatic value. The underlying frontier technology could also be used for alternate programmatic purposes.
